Wouldn’t it be great to have a time machine? When I was ooh… about 7 or 8 years of age, maybe a little older, I used to go to ballroom dancing lessons at the Civic Hall in Nantwich, Cheshire where I grew up. I was never very elegant, in fact I’m rather gauche, which sadly for my granddaughter, I passed on the gene.
Anyway, there was a big competition, well it seemed big to me at the time. My mum had spent hours on my dress, which I think she made. I had special silver dancing shoes worn with white frilly ankle socks and mum had fashioned my very plain, long hair into a top bun secured with pins and her treasured rope of pearls.
My dad and I were competing in one of sessions dancing to Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree by Dawn and I felt as though I was a princess. Until the end of the dance that is, when we were going back to our seats and I tripped over the step… fell on my knees and the string of pearls scattered everywhere. I think we did find each and everyone of them, but I was gutted for days.
I heard the song on the radio the other day, and it took me right back to that moment, well the moment before, dancing with my beloved and much missed, Dad. It was very emotive, possibly because I hadn’t heard it for years.
What time would you go back to in your life, how old and why?
